The Legal Rights Center and MN Coalition for Youth Justice are supportive of Hennepin County's decision to close the County Home School, and believe it presents an amazing opportunity for Hennepin County to fundamentally re-imagine its approach to youth justice. Since the county's decision to close the facility was made public this summer, the Legal Rights Center and MN Coalition for Youth Justice have worked to gather community perspectives into a vision for a path forward once the home school is closed in March 2022. The ideas and wisdom of community members, program staff, and most importantly, youth, are compiled into a proposal - Moving Beyond the Home School. To actualize the community vision outlined within the document will require a shift in funding and power, from incarceration to community-based interventions, from county-control to community-control. This will require some longer term changes, but could start with the 2022 budget. The proposal was shared today with the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners, leadership with the Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation, judges in Hennepin County Juvenile Court, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, and the Hennepin County Public Defender's Office. We are looking forward to hearing the responses of policymakers and our elected officials to these community demands. ![]()
